For immediate release:
THREE ARTISTS AWARDED FOR WORK REPRESENTING SOCIAL ISSUES
And, The Art Guild releases it’s Fall 2020 Schedule – Online and Outdoors!
The Art Guild’s most recent juried competition and artists’ reception, “JUSTICE,” included works that represented recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter, as well as entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and so much more.
“As an artist organization, we celebrate different points of view and encourage healthy dialogue” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director of The Art Guild. “During these times, it’s become increasingly difficult to talk about current events. We are happy to be a part of this important conversation.”

JUSTICE: An Art Competition goes beyond one topic Early entries indicate many social issues on the minds of artists across the country - July 17, 2020
July 17, 2020
For immediate release:
JUSTICE: An Art Competition goes beyond one topic
Early entries indicate many social issues on the minds of artists across the country
When The Art Guild created “JUSTICE,” their new juried competition and exhibition, they anticipated work in response to recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter. Little did they know that JUSTICE would go beyond that, with entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and so much more.
“As an artist organization, we celebrate different points of view and encourage healthy dialogue” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director of The Art Guild. “During these times, it’s become increasingly difficult to talk about current events. It is said that art often says what words sometimes cannot. With that in mind, it is our hope that JUSTICE will provide a way to “speak out” and help draw attention to different points of view about social issues, with a look within ourselves. We are looking forward to being a part of this important conversation.”
When Black Out Tuesday occurred, the organization felt that it was important to support the initiative by posting a black square on their Instagram account (@artguildpw). That same day a board member suggested “justice” as a competition and was met with unanimous support, ultimately resulting in an overhaul of The Art Guild’s schedule of shows for the remainder of the year.
The show has struck a chord with artists across the country. To date, almost half of all entries are from artists and photographers outside of New York. With entries from everywhere from Missouri to Japan, the artwork has been powerful, drawing attention to social issues that demand it.
The competition remains open for entries through Monday, August 3rd and all artists and photographers, high school and older, are invited to submit artworks for consideration. Be sure to show the emotions and what has empowered and inspired you to address social justice.
MEDIUMS Including but not limited to photography, acrylic, oil, watercolor, digital art, pastel, mixed media, collage, encaustic, etching/prints, or sculpture.

The Art Guild of Port Washington, an award-winning art school and gallery announced that they were featured on Small Business Revolution’s new series, “Small Business, Big Heart.”
The not-for-profit caught the eye of the organization with their Great Rainbow Community Hunt, that encouraged community members to create rainbows to display in their home or business, a sign that we are all in this together.
“We are so thankful to the Small Business Revolution for shining a light on our not-for-profit and its programs. Over the past few weeks we have learned that The Art Guild is much more than just a building. We are truly a community center,” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director. “The reality is that bringing the arts to the community is not new to us; creating a community-wide rainbow hunt and offering our free exhibitions online are. Now, we are excited for the opportunity to bring together more people through the visual arts.”
Since the start of PAUSE, The Art Guild has created online exhibitions as a way for attendees to get together and view collections together, online classes for students, as well as “TAG at HOME,” a portion of their website dedicated to free prompts, tips and micro lessons geared toward artists.
As part of the program, Small Business Revolution and their production partners have donated to The Art Guild’s GoFundMe page to help defray the costs of running the organization during these uncertain times.

On Sunday, November 3, The Art Guild hosted the 2019 Artists Reception and Awards for the “2019 Nassau County High School Student Artists Juried Competition and Exhibition.” With more than 250 attendees, this year’s competition was the most popular yet.
“We are so grateful to all of the students, teachers and school districts that participated in this show. “Everyone who is in the show is to be congratulated. It is just wonderful work,” Juror Bennett Horowitz noted, “And I’d also like to offer congratulations to their teachers. I know how hard the teachers work and they deserve it too.”

The Art Guild’s Art Lover’s Fling Honors Local Patrons of the Arts and Artists
The Art Guild (TAG) welcomed over 200 art lovers, artists and friends to this year’s Art Lover’s Fling Fundraising Event, Friday December 7, 2018, at the Village Club of Sands Point. This highly anticipated event honored patrons of the arts, Karen and Ed Adler, artist Stan Brodsky, and the memory of artist Ann Pellaton. Funds raised by the Fling go towards TAG’s educational programming for children and adults, scholarships for high school students pursuing the visual arts and care and upkeep of their home at Nassau County’s Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset.
“At a time when art education programs are being reduced or cut out entirely, we are delighted and grateful to see so many people come out to support our honorees and our programming,” said TAG’s executive director, Lisa Kaye Grossman. “This support will help us continue to provide and expand our educational offerings and community outreach in 2019. We are looking forward to cultivating partnerships with other organizations and hope to provide scholarships for elementary students and workshops for disabled adults and children.”
A Port Washington resident, Ann Pellaton was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of media. Constantly experimenting, Ann created art until shortly before her death in September 2018. TAG’s former executive director Diane Barespresented Ann’s family with her award, saying that she was “the little lady with great talent, an infectious laugh and a zest for life. It is an honor to recognize Ann Pellaton, a woman of amazing talent who was loved by all.”
As she presented Stan Brodsky’s award,Ellen Hallie Schiff, vice president of TAG, spoke of his long career teaching and producing art. “Stan always encourages his students to look inward to find their particular artistic voice and helps them become more of the artist they want to be.”Stan is post-abstract expressionist whose extensive travels have influenced his work. He taught at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University for 31 years and was named professor emeritus of art. Now 93, Stan continues to teach and works from his studio in Huntington, NY.
Karen and Ed Adler of Sands Point were presented their award by Village of Sands Point trustee Lynn Najman, who spoke of their love and support of many forms of the arts from painting to theatre. “Ed was chair and now a board member of Greenwich House, which brings art programs to schools. Karen and Ed are also proud to support local artists through the Port Washington Library gallery which bears their name.” They are also supporters of City Center, Lincoln Center Theater, and the Manhattan Theatre Club.
Proclamations and citations from Nassau County; Nassau County Legislator, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton; and NY StateAssemblyman, Tony D’Urso were also presented to the honorees.
The lively evening featured dancing to one of Long Island’s best bands The Touch, and silent auctions on over 40 pieces of art work by member artists and instructors. Other silent auctions included experiential opportunities and there was a myriad of raffle choices.
The Art Guild would like to thank the honorees, all who attended, over 100 sponsors and donors, the hard-working committee members, staff, and volunteers, who helped to make the evening a great success. Sponsors of the festive evening included: Karen and Ed Adler, Marceil and John Kazickas, Ilene & Steven Silberstein, Pam and Larry Tarica, Dr. & Mrs. James M.
