This class will help promote confidence and control in watercolors for the beginner. We will focus on developing good compositions through negative painting, focal points and a variety of tools. Students will learn about brush strokes, washes, mixes, blending and color theory. They will use watercolors to establish color and light, to work wet-on-wet, for texture, to suggest value changes, for negative painting with discussion on composition, as well as for focus and depth.

Emphasis in this class is for individual instructional techniques to foster your ability. Students will complete several small paintings in the class. A demonstration will be followed by hands on experience and personal critiques.

Lecture Series: The Whitney Biennial with Debbie Wells
Thursday August 8, 6:30-8:30
$15 M/$20 NM

Debbie Wells of Artful Circle will be our Virtual Tour Guide for the inagural evening of a new lecture series. This evening focuses on an overview of the Whitney Biennial as an “armchair tour” or as a preparation to visit the show in person. Understanding what the artists are trying to accomplish will give you a better appreciation of the works on view. After the talk, the floor will be open for a lively discussion. As artists, art collectors, and art lovers of all levels, the Art Guild’s audience should prove to have a very interesting perspective on the way the artists were chosen, the quality of their art, and why the controversary and the intensity of this show makes it an important showcase in the art world.

About the Whitney Biennial

Designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano, the museum is the jewel of the Meatpacking District, alongside new NYC attractions including the High Line and nearby Hudson Yards. Since Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney initiated this invitational exhibition in 1932, the Biennial is still the longest running survey of American art. The Whitney Biennial is a must-see for anyone who wants to see the art of the moment – paintings, sculptures, installations, photography and more by over 75 artists specially chosen by the Biennial curatorial team.

A few things make the Biennial unique: It was designed to express the voices of primarily young emerging artists with the majority under forty years old. This year, female artists are represented in record breaking numbers. The curators traveled the country looking for diversity in artist backgrounds and artistic expression with a message – from body image and gender identity, politics and current events, ethnicity, physical disabilities, social and community issues. This is an edgy, not pretty exhibition….their mission is to provoke thought and appeal to the way people look at their world today. Plus – there is always a major controversary going on behind the scenes and you will learn about the current protests as well as the newsworthy conflict that occurred at the last Biennial.

Wallflowers Exhibit at Northwell Health, Lake Success through April 28

Wallflowers Exhibit at Northwell Health, Lake Success through April 28

Wallflowers Exhibit at Northwell Health, Lake Success
October 16, 2018 – April 28, 2019
Closing Reception April 28, 3-5 pm

This exhibit features most of the works from the Wallflowers Exhibit which was on view in the galleries at Elderfields in September 2018. The exhibit focuses on the beauty of flowers from big lush peonies and perfect roses to the smallest snowdrops and dandelions, few things evoke more memories or encompass more symbolism. We long for the first flowers of spring in our gardens and they commemorate special occasions and holidays throughout the year. Artists depicted rolling meadows, formal gardens, a single bud in a vase or enough to fill a room.

The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit, on view since October 16, 2018, will close on April 28.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a little color and joy to the patients, their loved ones and the hardworking staff at Northwell Health.” said The Art Guild’s Executive Director, Lisa K. Grossman. “We hope that everyone, including Northwell’s medical and administrative staff, will join us for this reception.”

The exhibit, features 76 artworks by 52 artists, adds cheer and color to the hallway with a virtual garden of beautiful blooms, buds and blossoms in a variety of mediums.
