My true passion is color…. and lots of it!  I’m drawn to the way it’s reflected in light and shadow and I try to intensify this relationship while capturing the spirit of the moment.  I enjoy painting in oil and watercolor and usually have more than one project going at a time. This helps me be more objective with each piece. Whether working on florals, landscapes or portraits, I strive to illuminate the vibrancy of an image. The bold composition of my work stems from my experience as an art director and graphic designer.

Since going on safari, animals have crept into my work. In my “Garden Variety” series I am moving away from simply “copying” an image to a more fanciful reinvention of the world. To achieve this, I create collages as my reference, then continue to move elements around as I paint, composing a new reality.

I am also a designer for Vida, a sustainable socially conscious global company.  My designs can be viewed at https://shopvida.com/collections/shelley-holtzman

I have always loved flowers, gardening and crafts and all natural settings. I have abundant gratitude for a calming unspoiled outdoor location. My natural inclination is to paint moments where light is the main attraction.  I want to emphasize the energy created by the shadows and the glow of the lights.  I use Color to create vitality and vibration. My work tends to focus on organics, figures, the trappings of life and nature.  Pastels and oils are my preferred mediums. Recently I have begun to use colored pencils.

I sometimes think my work should be more socially critical, but I paint what I am drawn to.  I paint what makes me excited, so I continue to return to similar themes.

I work in Pastel, oil and mosaic and have studied with the late Anthony Palombo, Howard Rose, Christine LaFuente, Greg Kruetz, David Leffel and Robert A. Johnson

I’ve loved art since childhood. It was my major at the University of Michigan and led to a career in advertising in New York, as an art director for Brouillard Communications, a division of J. Walter Thompson. After 13 years, I decided to leave the corporate world to start a family and to once again, pursue my study of fine arts.

My passion for strong lines and vibrant colors comes from my background as a graphic designer. Flowers are ideal subjects and each painting Has become an exploration on how to transform shape and color into a bold but graceful expression.

Portraiture is another favorite focus, painting from models and creating commissioned works. I’m drawn to the way color is reflected in the light and shadow of people’s faces. I try to intensify this relationship on canvas while capturing the emotions and spirit of the individual personality.

With landscapes I strive to illuminate the vibrancy of the world around us.

I enjoy painting in different mediums … oil, acrylic and watercolor.

I’ve made my home in Port Washington, New York. Currently, I am Co-President of The Art Guild of Port Washington, and a member of the Port Washington Library Art Advisory Council.
