Working from a live model, this Workshop will provide you with the knowledge and experience that reveals the patterns to every key Feature on the head. Through demonstrations, handouts, exercises and personalized crItiques, you will be provided with the strategy and insight to identify and replicate the unique characteristics of the sitter’s Head and Individual Features.

The 4 session Workshop includes demos, handouts and personalized critique including:

  • The effect of light on the form and choosing an optimal lighting set-up to reveal the key features.
  • The overall structure of the head with keys to placement of each feature
  • Compositional guidelines to optimally position the head on the canvas.
  • Information regarding application of any medium to produce a convincing final rendering and likeness

Intrigued by the idea of painting abstractly? This four session class will give you a taste of painting in an abstract manner. We will be working with black and white water based enamel on watercolor paper. This experience has been called “freeing” and “a lot of fun “ by so many students. Experience what it feels like to paint this way. Lots of individualized instruction and discussion. The works you produce here can be the beginnings of new ideas and directions.

    About Ellen Hallie Schiff

Artist’s Statement
An essential truth seems to come alive when I use my body to create my paintings- something visceral and muscular; a directness that feels so “right”. The authentic mark is what I am after; the true, non-gimmicky, not contrived mark; the mark that is made when “I am the painting I am painting”. Playing with the paint, working sometimes at the speed of light, other times slowly and deliberately; all coming together in a flurry of physical activity. The result is an authentic moment in time.

Ellen is on the Art Advisory Council of the Port Washington Library and is the former Vice President of The Art Guild of Port Washington. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. Her friend and mentor is Stan Brodsky. View Ellen’s work at @ehschiff.

FOLIAGE & TREE WORKSHOP

WITH HOWARD ROSE

September 8, 15, 22, & 29, 1:30-4pm

Fall Session (4 weeks):
$250 Members/$285 Non-members

When Painting Plein air or in the studio, we all are striving to create elegant and creative landscapes. When we were in elementary school, our teacher taught us how to draw a tree. We of course made a big green ball with a brown straight trunk coming out of it. It’s taken 40 years to get over that ingrained image.  We will have 4 sessions going over all foliage: drawing calligraphic grasses and trees and limbs. Turning your brush to create elegant lines with the least amount of effort.  How do you draw big bunches of flowers? Our initial start is to draw each flower and ignore how our eyes really see bunches of flowers…shapes, variety and transition of light to lead the eye in the right direction.

Getting good at painting a scene that you would walk by a thousand times, and never pay attention to, could be the most exciting part in this journey to become a great painter.

We are the artists…We don’t accept the given image because we want to make sure our design is as good as can be. We can change the shapes, move things around, push the light for drama and add atmosphere when you might not see it in your chosen image.

At iur first session we will review other artists that have  expertise in our type of trees and foliage techniques. We will go over their work and hopefully will inspire you to learn from them  and add different techniques to your own paintings. Howard will then do a short demo at the start of each class based on the subject that we are working on for that class.

Over the next 3 sessions we will cover everything that has been part of your landscape painting  journey: Colors of the landscape, brush technique, texture, atmosphere, moving objects around  to create great design, seeing the shapes of beautiful objects, edges, arial perspective and picking a pleasing subject.

There is lots of learning to do and with practice, you will start to SEE the possibilities and how every 5 degree turn is a beautiful painting…waiting to be painted.

About Jesse Lane:
Through art, I’ve been able to find something inside myself that changed my life.
Growing up, I often felt alone.  In school, I was struggling with the challenges of dyslexia.  I desperately wanted to find a place in life where I didn’t feel inferior. For years, I bottled up my feelings.  Then I realized they could be a source of inspiration.  I began creating images of personal struggle and intimate emotion. What was hidden for so long became voiced and heard. For the first time, I felt truly seen. I took my weakness and made it my strength. Along the way, I’ve discovered we all share these feelings. They are universal.

When people see my portraits, they’re surprised I work in colored pencil.  I love the precision and versatility of colored pencil. This medium can be as rich and nuanced as any other.  One of my goals is to advance colored pencil in the world of fine art.”

Jesse Lane (born 1990) lives in The Woodlands, Texas, near Houston.  His earliest teacher was his father, Jerry Lane, a former illustrator and underground cartoonist.
Jesse earned a degree in visualization from Texas A&M University.  He also studied art in Italy, where he was greatly influenced by the lighting and drama of the master painter Caravaggio.
Jesse’s compelling portraits have appeared on the covers of publications including International Artist and The Artist’s Magazine. Southwest Art Magazine recognized him as one of the nation’s leading young emerging artists, and he’s been featured numerous times in American Art Collector.

Numerous awards include top honors from the Salmagundi Club, International Artist Magazine, the Colored Pencil Society of America and the Hudson Valley Art Association.  Jesse has also been a finalist several times in theInternational Art Renewal Center Salon.

Jesse is represented by RJD Gallery in Bridgehampton, New York.

He works at his home studio in The Woodlands, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Kinsey, a teacher and talented sculptor. Jesse  teaches workshops nationwide.

Having grown up in the cosmopolitan city of Washington, D.C., Stacy Kamin has lived a life any aspiring artist would envy. Providence brought Stacy into the world with a mother who nurtured her interest in drawing and painting every step of the way. Noted artist and teacher, Jacqueline Kamin, indulged her child’s art supply caprices and enrolled her in children’s classes at the National Gallery at a very young age. Art was alive in this bright artistic spirit, and as Stacy herself says, “Creating images from pencils and paint was like magic to me. I knew early on that I had to be an artist.”

Stacy studied illustration and traditional animation at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, earning a BA in 2000. After graduation, she interned with a small animation company long enough to realize that illustration was not her calling, although a fascination with capturing movement was. This she would explore through line and paint as a fine artist.

She joined her family in Los Angeles and there found a well-respected Chinese artist, Shuqiao Zhou, to mentor her privately for six years. Zhou’s teachers came from the great Russian lineage of Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov, and through this expressive tradition, imparted a love of paint that is still a hallmark of Stacy’s work.

Drawn to the dramatic effects of Rembrandt, Stacy sought out the instruction of two well-known masters of this knowledge—David A Leffel and Sherrie McGraw. She credits their influence for the startling light that she is able to achieve in her own work. “They introduced me to Abstract Realism, a way of painting so rich that I can’t imagine my education ever ending—I will be a student of this great tradition my entire life.”

This humility coupled with a selfless generosity led to a desire to teach. She presently teaches workshopsfor Bright Light Fine Art nationwide. Recently she taught a figure and still life painting workshop with David A Leffel and Sherrie McGraw at Scottsdale Artist School; in 2019 she conducted a portrait painting class in Noyer’s France; and locally she teaches private workshops in Seal Beach.

In her own words Stacy describes this life-long obsession this way: “I believe art is supposed to evoke emotions and feelings in human beings. When I see a great painting, it touches my soul. Even if I can’t describe what I feel in words, a work of artaffects me profoundly. The reason I never ceasestudying is because the magic of capturing life on a flat surface continues to intrigue me. I want my own work to provoke thoughts and emotions for viewers, so that they too can experience the beauty that captivates me still.”
