THREE ARTISTS AWARDED FOR WORK REPRESENTING SOCIAL ISSUES, The Art Guild releases it’s Fall 2020 Schedule - Online and Outdoors! August 28 2020

August 28, 2020

For immediate release:

THREE ARTISTS AWARDED FOR WORK REPRESENTING SOCIAL ISSUES
And, The Art Guild releases it’s Fall 2020 Schedule – Online and Outdoors!

The Art Guild’s most recent juried competition and artists’ reception, “JUSTICE,” included works that represented recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter, as well as entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and so much more.

“As an artist organization, we celebrate different points of view and encourage healthy dialogue” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director of The Art Guild. “During these times, it’s become increasingly difficult to talk about current events. It is said that art often says what words sometimes cannot. We were glad that JUSTICE provided a way to “speak out” and helped draw attention to different points of view about social issues, with a look within ourselves. We are happy to be a part of this important conversation.”

JUROR OF AWARDS Seung Lee, Korean-American contemporary artist and Director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies and a professor at Long Island University, Post Campus selected these artists to be awarded for their work in the show:

JUSTICE: An Art Competition goes beyond one topic Early entries indicate many social issues on the minds of artists across the country - July 17, 2020

July 17, 2020

For immediate release:

JUSTICE: An Art Competition goes beyond one topic

Early entries indicate many social issues on the minds of artists across the country

When The Art Guild created  “JUSTICE,” their new juried competition and exhibition, they anticipated work in response to recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter. Little did they know that JUSTICE would go beyond that, with entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and so much more.

“As an artist organization, we celebrate different points of view and encourage healthy dialogue” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director of The Art Guild. “During these times, it’s become increasingly difficult to talk about current events. It is said that art often says what words sometimes cannot. With that in mind, it is our hope that JUSTICE will provide a way to “speak out” and help draw attention to different points of view about social issues, with a look within ourselves. We are looking forward to being a part of this important conversation.”

When Black Out Tuesday occurred, the organization felt that it was important to support the initiative by posting a black square on their Instagram account (@artguildpw). That same day a board member suggested “justice” as a competition and was met with unanimous support, ultimately resulting in an overhaul of The Art Guild’s schedule of shows for the remainder of the year.

The show has struck a chord with artists across the country. To date, almost half of all entries are from artists and photographers outside of New York. With entries from everywhere from Missouri to Japan, the artwork has been powerful, drawing attention to social issues that demand it.

The competition remains open for entries through Monday, August 3rd and all artists and photographers, high school and older, are invited to submit artworks for consideration. Be sure to show the emotions and what has empowered and inspired you to address social justice.

MEDIUMS Including but not limited to photography, acrylic, oil, watercolor, digital art, pastel, mixed media, collage, encaustic, etching/prints, or sculpture.

The Art Guild of Port Washington, an award-winning art school and gallery announced that they were featured on Small Business Revolution’s new series, “Small Business, Big Heart.”

Over the past few weeks we have learned that The Art Guild is much more than just a building. We are truly a community center,” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director.  “The reality is that bringing the arts to the community is not new to us; creating a community-wide rainbow hunt and offering our free exhibitions online are. Now, we are excited for the  opportunity to bring together more people through the visual arts.”

Since the start of PAUSE, The Art Guild has created online exhibitions as a way for attendees to get together and view collections together, online classes for students, as well as “TAG at HOME,” a portion of their website dedicated to free prompts, tips and micro lessons geared toward artists.

2019 Nassau County HS Artists’ Reception and Award Ceremony at The Art Guild

On Sunday, November 3, The Art Guild hosted the 2019 Artists Reception and Awards for the “2019 Nassau County High School Student Artists Juried Competition and Exhibition.” With more than 250 attendees, this year’s competition was the most popular yet.

“We are so grateful to all of the students, teachers and school districts that participated in this show. It is encouraging to see so much support for the arts in Nassau County,” said Lisa Grossman, Executive Director of The Art Guild. “We are also grateful for sponsors PM Pediatrics and Blick Art for their sponsorship and support of this very special event that provides a platform for aspiring artists and NYS Assemblyman Tony D’Urso for providing Certificates of Merit to the students.”

“Everyone who is in the show is to be congratulated. It is just wonderful work,” Juror Bennett Horowitz noted, “And I’d also like to offer congratulations to their teachers. I know how hard the teachers work and they deserve it too.”

A common theme throughout the show was the support that art teachers gave students beyond the classroom. “My teacher, Ms. Nancy Scott, encouraged me to enter this show,” said Skyler Basco who was awarded 3rd place for her self-portrait. Kalynn Chen, a Manhasset senior who took 1st place for her “Time’s Bride” work also mentioned the impact and encouragement of her teachers, Lori Oldaker and Natyla Panullo, to enter the show.

Artists, collectors, gift givers and community members are invited to support The Art Guild’s only fundraiser “Art from the Heart – 10×10 Holiday Art Auction” on December 7th. Thanks to the generosity of artists, The Art Guild will auction off over 100 works starting at just $100, with proceeds going toward subsidizing their below market classes and scholarships so that art education is accessible to all, and the upkeep of their historical home.  The exhibition opens Saturday, November 30 and items will be auctioned Saturday, December 7th between 7pm – 10pm. “Best and Final” offers will be accepted up through December 6th.

The Art Guild's Art Lover's Fling Honors Local Patrons of the Arts and Artists (2018)

The Art Guild’s Art Lover’s Fling Honors Local Patrons of the Arts and Artists

The Art Guild (TAG) welcomed over 200 art lovers, artists and friends to this year’s Art Lover’s Fling Fundraising Event, Friday December 7, 2018, at the Village Club of Sands Point. This highly anticipated event honored patrons of the arts, Karen and Ed Adler, artist Stan Brodsky, and the memory of artist Ann Pellaton. Funds raised by the Fling go towards TAG’s educational programming for children and adults, scholarships for high school students pursuing the visual arts and care and upkeep of their home at Nassau County’s Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset.

“At a time when art education programs are being reduced or cut out entirely, we are delighted and grateful to see so many people come out to support our honorees and our programming,” said TAG’s executive director, Lisa Kaye Grossman. “This support will help us continue to provide and expand our educational offerings and community outreach in 2019. We are looking forward to cultivating partnerships with other organizations and hope to provide scholarships for elementary students and workshops for disabled adults and children.”

A Port Washington resident, Ann Pellaton was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of media. Constantly experimenting, Ann created art until shortly before her death in September 2018. TAG’s former executive director Diane Barespresented Ann’s family with her award, saying that she was “the little lady with great talent, an infectious laugh and a zest for life. It is an honor to recognize Ann Pellaton, a woman of amazing talent who was loved by all.”

As she presented Stan Brodsky’s award,Ellen Hallie Schiff, vice president of TAG, spoke of his long career teaching and producing art. “Stan always encourages his students to look inward to find their particular artistic voice and helps them become more of the artist they want to be.”Stan is post-abstract expressionist whose extensive travels have influenced his work. He taught at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University for 31 years and was named professor emeritus of art. Now 93, Stan continues to teach and works from his studio in Huntington, NY.

Karen and Ed Adler of Sands Point were presented their award by Village of Sands Point trustee Lynn Najman, who spoke of their love and support of many forms of the arts from painting to theatre. “Ed was chair and now a board member of Greenwich House, which brings art programs to schools. Karen and Ed are also proud to support local artists through the Port Washington Library gallery which bears their name.” They are also supporters of City Center, Lincoln Center Theater, and the Manhattan Theatre Club.

Proclamations and citations from Nassau County; Nassau County Legislator, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton; and NY StateAssemblyman, Tony D’Urso were also presented to the honorees.

The lively evening featured dancing to one of Long Island’s best bands The Touch, and silent auctions on over 40 pieces of art work by member artists and instructors. Other silent auctions included experiential opportunities and there was a myriad of raffle choices.

The Art Guild would like to thank the honorees, all who attended, over 100 sponsors and donors, the hard-working committee members, staff, and volunteers, who helped to make the evening a great success. Sponsors of the festive evening included: Karen and Ed Adler, Marceil and John Kazickas, Ilene & Steven Silberstein, Pam and Larry Tarica, Dr. & Mrs. James M. Crawford, The Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, Shelley and Jeff Holtzman, Amanda and Jon Coppola, Anne and Vincent Mai, Dina and Phillip Adsetts, Audrey and Russell Berman, Miriam and Robert Caslow, Ruth and Tony Chung, Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Susan Isaacs and Elkan Abramowitz, Hyman and Verna Livingston, Elin and Michael Nierenberg, Carol and Louis Schepp, Karen and Steven Seltzer, and Kay and Leo Ullman.

Active in the community and longtime supporters of education and the arts, Karen and Ed Adler of Port Washington, generously helped establish the Port Washington Library Foundation’s first endowment fund. Income from their gift perpetuates the Library Art Gallery which exhibits outstanding works by local artists. Steps away, the new Spielman Children’s Library opened last year thanks to a successful capital campaign Ed chaired for the library. Ed has served as mayor the Village of Sands Points for the past seven years.  The Adlers are enthusiastic supporters of The Art Guild’s programming and accomplishments.

A life-long resident of the New York area, Stan Brodsky taught for 31 years at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University where he was named professor emeritus of art.  Stan considers himself to be a post-abstract expressionist whose extensive travels have influenced his work.  His award-winning abstract landscape paintings have been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibits for the past 50 years. He received the Heckscher Museum’s 2013 Celebrate Achievement Award for contributions to Long Island arts and culture.  Stan works from his studio in Huntington, NY and continues to teach artists.

A Port Washington resident, Ann Pellaton was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of media including: watercolor, oil, etching, monoprint and collage.  Her work has been exhibited world-wide, has received numerous distinguished awards, and she is listed in “Who’s Who in American Women.” Ann was the former president of the National Association of Women Artists.  She was involved in many art organizations and was a long-time member of the Port Library’s Advisory Council and The Art Guild. Constantly experimenting, Ann created art until shortly before her death in September.  She will be dearly missed.

The evening includes, a buffet dinner, beer and wine (cash bar), and live music by The Touch and dancing. Raffles and auctions include: Museum passes and docent tours, wine tastings at various east end wineries, tickets to Landmark on Main Street, the Paramount Huntington, paintings by Art Guild members and other artists, a golf outing, and so much more!

Tickets are $115 per person before November 9 ($130 after), and sponsorships are available. If you wish to purchase tickets or donate raffle or auction items, please visit the website www.theartguild.org, email info@theartguild.orgor call 516-304-5797.
